February’s member spotlight is on Judy Westenhoefer. Judy is a long-time supporting member of our fire department and also serves as Trustee. In Judy’s words, she joined because she has a family and friend connection to the volunteer fire service. Her good friend, who is a firefighter at the same rural department that her uncle volunteers at, encouraged her to volunteer to see how rewarding it can be. Judy’s favorite part of volunteering is, “being helpful to some of the bravest, nicest, selfless people there are. I have gotten an education in the workings of a fire department that has been eye-opening and makes me realize just how much sacrifice the firefighters make, how much education they have, and how much cooperative work there is in making a good department.” When she isn’t spending time at the fire department, Judy is enjoying her retirement after a career of teaching, customer service, and assembly at Mack Trucks. You’ll find her gardening, hiking, camping, reading, baking, and more! When asked what she would tell someone who is curious about volunteering at our fire department, Judy said, “if you feel strongly about volunteering and want to support a front line organization, you will feel reward, appreciation, a feeling of family, and know you are doing something good for others.”
